Emily’s Journey

Emily is a student at LYW in Truro. Over her two years with our provision she has gained self-belief and confidence.

This year Emily has made exceptional progress across a wide range of personal, social and employability skills. As a highly autistic learner, Emily has demonstrated significant growth in her ability to manage change, engage with others and step beyond her comfort zone with increasing confidence and independence.

A most notable achievement has been the development of her communication and social interaction skills. Emily has gained confidence in using her voice to express her thoughts, preferences and opinions appropriately. Through targeted support and practice, she has improved her ability to engage in conversation, hold small talk, ask and answer questions, listen to others and communicate effectively.

She is increasingly able to compromise, consider alternative viewpoints and contribute positively within group situations. A key highlight of the year has been her work placements within a community cafe and a charity shop.

Initially uncertain about face to face interaction with members of the public, and working in an unfamiliar environment, Emily embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, demonstrating resilience, adaptability and a growing confidence and ability to manage situations outside of her comfort zone.

Furthermore, Emily completed a food hygiene course resulting in a recognisable certificate, boosting her CV and supporting future employability.

Emily has shown a deep commitment to developing her functional skills, particularly in numeracy, literacy, speaking and listening. She approaches learning with focus and determination, applying these skills in a variety of real-life contexts.

Alongside her academic and employability progress, Emily has shown substantial personal growth. She has developed greater self-confidence, patience and understanding of others. Emily demonstrates increasing empathy and awareness of different perspectives, helping her build positive relationships with peers and adults.

“Emily has had an outstanding year and is set to continue her journey within the Work Experience group next year. Her progression in confidence, communication, independence, and employability skills provides a strong foundation for her future aspirations as she approaches the next stage of her development with enthusiasm and optimism.” LYW Tutor
